Frequently Asked Questions

Session Dates for Summer School 2025
ALF Summer School will be held June 16 through July 11, 2025. Classes WILL be held on Thursday, June 19, Juneteenth. Classes WILL NOT be held Friday, July 4 for the Independence Day holiday.

Location
Students in grades K-6 will attend Palm Crest Elementary (PCR) 5025 Palm Drive, La Cañada Flintridge, CA 91011. A map of the campus will be sent with the Welcome Packet in June.

Cost
The Summer School Program Fee is $200 per class period.

1 period = $200, 2 periods = $400, 3 periods = $600
The one-time fee pays for the entire 4-week session.

Kinder and 1st grade students can choose a 1-period class, a 2-period class, or a 3-period class.
2nd through 6th grade students may choose up to 3 periods.

Classes
All classes are four weeks and students should plan to attend the entire session to receive the greatest benefit. The program is Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM – 12:00 PM and includes up to 3 class periods and 2 outdoor breaks. If your student does not take all three class periods, they cannot be on campus during their non-class time except for travel to and from classes. For example – a student cannot register for 1st and 3rd periods and just “hang out” during 2nd period. There is no class credit or homework during summer school.

COVID-19 and Other Protocols
Guidelines for social gatherings may change and we will continue to monitor Los Angeles County advisories, as well as follow La Cañada Unified School District safety protocols. Each year, the ALF Summer School Principal also sets specific administrative and emergency procedures based on current conditions.

Eligibility
All students entering grades K-6 may participate in ALF Summer School. Students should register for the grade they will be entering in the fall of 2025. Students entering TK in the fall are not eligible. We do not require that the student live in La Cañada Flintridge.

Registration
Registration
will open on Monday, March 10, 2025 at 12:00 Noon and closes Friday, June 6, 2025 at 5:00 PM, or whenever full. Late Fees apply after June 1. The cost of the program includes the entire 4-week session. ALF Summer School does not offer 1-week sessions so you may not enroll a student for any particular week individually or obtain a refund for dates your student did not attend.

Parents have asked if they can pre-register their student(s) in order to get through the registration process quickly. The simple answer is “no.” However, you may review the “Preparing for ALF Summer School sheet to learn what information we will ask you during registration, so you can begin compiling it. Classes will be held in your cart for 15 minutes while you complete the registration process.

Once you register, most of the family’s information is held in your Active.com account, making it easier to sign-up the next time. You may return to this online account at any time to update information such as the student address or parent contact phone number. The link is also in your confirmation email. If you have trouble registering, please contact us at 818-790-2211 or programs@alflintridge.org. Assistance League of Flintridge Summer School reserves the right to cancel a class that does not meet minimum student enrollment.

Waitlist
ALF Summer School classes can fill quickly. Most classes do not have transfers or drop-outs after the first day of registration, therefore, the chance of being registered from a waitlist is slim. Before registering, be sure to ask your student(s) for their first choice of classes and their back-up choices. If a class is full and shows “WAITLIST ONLY” you can add your student’s name to the waitlist by registering for it. There is no charge to do this. Waitlist students are ranked in the order that the request is received. If space becomes available, we will call or email you to see if your student is still interested in changing classes then make the transfer. BE SURE to sign up for another class while you wait for a spot so your student won’t be left without a class at all. If you have any questions about the waitlist process, please contact programs@alflintridge.org or call 818-790-2211.

Transfers
We realize that mistakes are made and sometimes students simply change their minds. We will transfer a student to a different class, provided the class is still available at the time of the request. You may email programs@alflintridge.org or call 818-790-2211 to make this request. Transfers made on or after June 1, 2025 will include a $30 Transfer Fee per class. After school begins, transfers will only be made as an exception and with the consent of the Summer School Chairmen.

No Refunds
Assistance League of Flintridge has a NO REFUND policy for philanthropic program enrollment. This means no refunds for changed minds or impromptu vacations. Also, we do not offer credits or refunds for partial attendance. Note about COVID: If a class is required to close due to LCUSD requirements, no program fees will be credited or refunded, as all Summer School preparations, such as curriculum planning and supply purchases, staffing commitments, and administrative work will have already been outlaid.

Late Fees
PLEASE REGISTER EARLY! A Late Fee of $30 will be applied to each class registration beginning Sunday, June 1, 2025. If you sign up for 3 classes that’s $90! Most classes fill well before June 1, however.

Scholarships
A limited number of scholarships are available to La Cañada Unified School District students based on need. For more information and/or to obtain an application form, please contact the principal of the school your student is presently attending. All financial information will be kept private.

Instrument Rental
Instrument rental is available for most band instruments (except percussion) for a fee of $50. You may select this option during the registration process. Students who have rented an instrument should receive their instruments on the first day of Summer School and must return them during the final week of July 7-11. A Late Fee may be incurred if the instrument is not returned to the instructor or to ALF by the last day of class.

Special Needs
During the registration process, we ask that you list any special needs that your child may have. Please be specific and thorough in your description. We share these notes with the Summer School staff, teachers, and health clerk so that they are aware of your student’s special needs. Be assured that the student’s medical information will be held in strict confidence. If you have specific concerns about your student, contact us.

Medications
Students who require medication to be taken during Summer School hours must have a Physician’s Recommendations for Medication form on file in the Summer School Health Office. The form must be updated every time a prescription changes and is valid through the duration of the summer session. A new form must be completed each year.

Behavior Standards
Assistance League of Flintridge programs are intended for students who are genuinely interested in the “joy of learning.” Because of the necessity for harmonious group interaction, a situation in which any student is discourteous, disruptive or uncooperative will be managed in the following manner:

  • Initial infraction: The student will be warned and the warning recorded.
  • Next infraction: The student will be warned and parents notified. The second warning will be recorded.
  • Final infraction: The student will be excluded from participation for the remainder of the session.

Program fees will not be refunded if a student is excluded from participation.

In addition, the ALF Summer School Principal sets the Student Conduct & Responsibility Guidelines for the school location. These guidelines are included in the ALF Summer School Welcome Packet that is sent to parents in June and also posted on the school page of our website.

Welcome Packet
Welcome Packets will be sent out electronically approximately one to two weeks prior to the first day of school. The email packet will include a welcome letter from the ALF Summer School Chairs, a link to your online account login to check student classes and room numbers, Car Line instructions, a map of the school and other special instructions needed for ALF Summer School. If your address, email, or emergency contact information changes after your student is registered, be sure to make the appropriate corrections as soon as you know them, by going to your online account. If you do not receive the Welcome Packet by Wednesday, June 11, 2025, contact the ALF Summer School office. Do not “unsubscribe” from Active Network or Active.com, our registration and communications company, and check your spam regularly. During Summer School, we will use the same email address(es) to send out important notices and communications from the Principal. All emails from ALF Summer School will also be posted on the PCR page of the website.

What to Bring
ALF Summer School provides all the school supplies for the classrooms. You will want to send your child with a small snack and a water bottle with his/her name on it. Sunscreen should be applied in the morning before school.

Report an Absence
Consistent daily attendance during the entire 4-week session is highly encouraged for student to attain the greatest benefit. If a student will be absent, a parent/guardian must contact us by calling the Attendance Hotline at 818-949-4875 * or email alfattendance@gmail.com on the day of the absence. Please include the student’s first and last name, the date(s) of absence, reason for missed absence, and a contact phone number in case there are questions. Additionally, the PCR Summer School Office is 818-952-8360, if you have questions during school hours. If you know in advance that your student will miss some days of ALF Summer School, kindly let us know by sending an email to summerschool@alflintridge.org before June 11.  * Subject to change
