ASSISTANCE LEAGUE OF FLINTRIDGE VOLUNTEERS - PHOTO COURTESY OUTLOOK NEWSPAPERS

Assistance League®  of Flintridge is a nonprofit service organization of volunteers committed to identifying and serving the needs of the community through philanthropic programs developed and administered by its members.

Assistance League of Flintridge formed in 1951 as a chapter of National Assistance League®, which created its first chapter in 1919. Assistance League now links more than 24,000 community volunteers through more than 115 chapters in 26 states. Each chapter develops and administers programs to meet the needs of their specific communities.

Assistance League of Flintridge supports and administers five philanthropies in La Cañada Flintridge and has two auxiliary organizations whose members also devote their efforts to effective community service:

Assisteens® Auxiliary involves students in grades 7-12. They select their own philanthropic programs and fund them entirely through their own fundraising efforts.  Cañada Auxiliary of Professionals (CAP), established in 1990, involves people in the workforce who wish to offer their time to philanthropic endeavors.

Community Outreach

ALF Community Needs Assessment & Outreach Committee

MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY NEEDS ASSESSMENT & OUTREACH COMMITTEE ARE PICTURED WITH MARAL SOUSANI, FOSTER YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM AND CHRISTINA CASTRO, FOSTER YOUTH SERVICES COORDINATING PROGRAM

When members of Assistance League of Flintridge (ALF) learned that teens "age out" of foster care as "emancipated minors" on their eighteenth birthday, they wanted to know more. They found that at a local high school there are eight such individuals, and another is living in a neighboring community. These young persons will soon need to set up housekeeping independently in their own living quarters.

The ALF Community Needs Assessment and Outreach (CNA&O) committee consulted Maral Sousani, a counselor with the Foster Youth Achievement Program in Student Health and Human Services, and Christina Castro, a counselor in the Los Angeles County Office of Education, Foster Youth Services Coordinating Program. With their input and guidance, the ALF committee compiled a "wish list" of items needed by the teens in foster care. All of them are graduating from high school and plan to continue their education. "Our committee identified these young persons as being deserving of extra support at this transition in their lives," said Linda Gill, CNA&O Chair.

Assistance League of Flintridge funds philanthropic programs and projects with earnings from its thrift shop, The Bargain Box, which is staffed by ALF member volunteers. For each young person, the committee purchased a lap top computer and a protective sleeve. For each recipient they also purchased a bedding set including sheets, pillow cases, and comforter. The funds to purchase these items were approved by ALF members. In addition, a list was posted identifying other items that Assistance League members could purchase individually and donate, including coffee makers, office supplies, household items, and hygiene products.

CNA&O Committee members include Julie Crum, Rosalind Hilton, Lyn Messner, Mary Mieding, Nana Smith, Maureen Swenson, and Linda Gill, Chair. Deena Keys, Susan Partamian (ALF President-Elect) and Donna Shepherd (ALF President) also provided support to the committee.

ALF DONATES OVER 300 NEW BOOKS TO THE PLAINVIEW CHARTER ACADEMY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LIBRARY

- "When will the new books be here?" an eager student was heard to ask after learning that more than 300 new books would soon be on the school library shelves. Members of Assistance League® of Flintridge (ALF) had organized a book drive for Plainview Charter Academy Elementary School, allocating $3000 to purchase new books for the recently renovated library.

- Plainview Elementary librarian, Luz Mendieta-Lopez, was invited by ALF to compile a list of titles that the students would enjoy. The books were then purchased and donated to the school by Assistance League of Flintridge with funds from ALF's "Bargain Box Thrift Shop." Located in La Cañada Flintridge, the Bargain Box Thrift Shop is managed and staffed by ALF members. Through the sale of clothing and other items donated by the community, earnings from the thrift shop support the many philanthropic programs of Assistance League of Flintridge and its auxiliaries.

- Many ALF members also personally purchased and donated books to the drive.

- ALF's gift of books was announced by Plainview Charter Academy Elementary Principal Kenneth L. Johnson at a recent school assembly. Johnson encourages his students to love books, and has arranged for the school library to be open after hours two afternoons each week. Present for the event and representing ALF were President, Donna Shepherd, and the ALF committee for Community Needs Assessment and Outreach, chaired by Linda Gill. Members of the committee include Julie Crum, Mary Mieding, Nana Smith, Maureen Swenson, Lyn Messner, and Rosalind Hilton.

- The ALF Community Needs Assessment & Outreach committee worked closely with Uma Shrivastava, owner of La Cañada Book and Toy Store, to purchase the requested books. Shrivastava provided the books for a generous discount.

- Many Assistance League of Flintridge members also individually chose to buy books on the list to donate to the school.

- Assistance League of Flintridge chose to undertake this book drive as its participation in USA Today Weekend Magazine's annual nation-wide "Make A Difference Day." ALF past recipients include the La Cañada Flintridge County of Los Angeles Public Library, the Special Day Preschool Classroom at Paradise Canyon Elementary School in La Cañada Flintridge, Apperson Elementary School, and Sunland Elementary School, both in Sunland.

ALF DONATES OVER 300 NEW BOOKS TO THE SUNLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LIBRARY

- "YES!" exclaimed over 500 Sunland Elementary School students at a recent all-school assembly, when asked, "Do you like to read?" Lisa Dachs-Ornelas, Principal, announced that more than 300 books would soon be on the school library shelves, and thanked the members of Assistance League of Flintridge (ALF), who had voted to organize a book drive for the school.

- Present for the assembly and representing ALF was the ALF committee for Community Needs Assessment and Outreach, chaired by Linda Gill.

- Sunland Elementary classroom teachers were invited by ALF to compile a list of titles that their students would enjoy, and the books were then purchased and donated to the school by Assistance League® of Flintridge.

- They were purchased with funds from ALF's "Bargain Box Thrift Shop." Located in La Cañada Flintridge, the Bargain Box Thrift Shop is managed and staffed by ALF members. Through the sale of clothing and other items donated by the community, earnings from the thrift shop support the many philanthropic programs of Assistance League of Flintridge and its auxiliaries.

- Many Assistance League of Flintridge members also chose to buy individual books on the list to donate to the school.

- The ALF Community Needs Assessment & Outreach committee worked closely with Uma Schrivastava, owner of La Cañada Book and Toy Store, to purchase the requested books at an optimal price.

- Assistance League of Flintridge chose this book drive as its participation in USA Weekend Magazine's annual nation-wide "Make A Difference Day." ALF past recipients include the La Cañada Flintridge County of Los Angeles Public Library, the Special Day Preschool Classroom at Paradise Canyon Elementary School, and Apperson Elementary School in Sunland.

- Also present for the assembly at Sunland Elementary School were John Rome, Los Angeles Unified School District Director for the Northeast District; David Gonzalez, Education Deputy for the office of Monica Ratliff, member of the L.A. Board of Education; and a representative from the office of Felipe Fuentes, Councilmember for the 7th District, City of Los Angeles. Certificates of commendation were presented to Assistance League of Flintridge.

Assistance League® of Flintridge was recently selected by the TJ Maxx Foundation to receive a $5000 donation in recognition of ALF's community service.

The members of Assistance League elected to direct the donated funds to purchase instruments for its elementary Instrumental Music program.

As a feature of its program, ALF offers instruments to its students, when available. The instruments may be rented for a nominal fee that covers maintenance and administrative costs. The instruments must meet certain quality standards, and because the students are young and still growing, the instruments must be sized accordingly. There is an ongoing need to retire used instruments and to purchase replacements, which can be an expensive endeavor.

This year, the ALF Instrumental Music program committee identified needed instruments, and two cellos and a viola were purchased. In addition, percussion instruments are on order.

"We are so grateful to the TJMaxx Foundation for its generous support of the ALF Instrumental Music program," said Kathy Kumagai, ALF Instrumental Music Chairman. "In the coming year, the program will celebrate thirty years of providing a quality music experience for La Cañada students. Talented, highly qualified teachers staff the program, which is open to all LCUSD fourth through sixth grade students."

Assistance League of Flintridge welcomes new members all year. For more information about membership and ALF philanthropic programs, visit ALFlintridge.org or call (818) 790-1328.
